So, I found out that the reason the Samba server wasn’t showing any video while trying to boot up was… something. I found a solution to this problem on a Linux support forum. I fixed it and now I can actually use the computer as a Samba and a TeamSpeak server. That is most awesome. SUSE Linux 10.0 boots up pretty fast, much faster than Fedora and SUSE’s YaST (Yet another Setup Tool) was very easy to setup the Samba server. I can’t figure out how to add users, but I really don’t think that’s a big deal right now. Lexy knows the admin login and can read and write to the folder, so I think it’s all good. I’ll probably see if Dave has any books on the issue whenever he gets back from the Army or knows how to do it himself. As for TeamSpeak, I’ve set that up so many times, it’s not even funny, so I had that working in around ten minutes. For those of you who don’t know what TS is, it’s an application that acts like a voice chat. You hook up your headset, have TS connect to the TS server, and you can actually talk to anyone who is logged on to the server with your microphone. It’s super neato. If any of you are looking for a good implementation of Linux (ha, yeah right) look into SUSE Linux. It’s made by Novell, the big network company. I like it, though it does take slightly longer than my Windows machine to boot up and shut down. It might have something to do with the 600MHz processor in the Linux box compared to the 1.81GHz of my Windows machine. I think that if I had a better motherboard in the Linux box, they’d be closer to each other. I might do that… I have a spare motherboard at Lexy’s grandmother’s house. Don’t ask me why it’s there… it just is.
Anyway, the play we say tonight at Eugene’s high school was called Hit and Misdemeanor. Honestly, if the play was performed by stage professionals, it would still be a fairly bad play. I think the high school students did an OK job, but Lexy’s sister Kelsey was the best of the lot. I’m not saying that because I’m biased or anything, it’s not a compliment I give out lightly as I’m very picky about stage acting. I just think that Kelsey was the most in tune with her character and exhibited that connected extremely well. Pretty much all the others acted as if they were reading from a memorized script. Well, I think that’s enough for now.
On our way back from JC today we took a different route home. Along that route we found this highway junction. Rather funny if you ask me. Oh, that’s a much scaled down version of the original picture.
I set up my very first Samba server on a Linux machine. I did this with no prior training and I knew nothing about what I was doing and it works. I can save a file to the Linux machine from one Windows machine on the network and access it from a different Windows machine on my network. It may not sound like a big deal to you guys, but I’ve been trying to do this Linux file server thing for a while now and I finally did it. Now I just need to get the Linux box to boot up to itself so I can add actual identities for the folders. That’s the thing about Linux I’ve found out… it takes a fucking lifetime to boot up. I know there are fixes and shit for it out there, but I don’t use Linux as my main computer so I really don’t give that much of a shit. Well, I should probably go to bed now, so I will mess with it later. Hopefully, it will have booted up by then. If it doesn’t… then I don’t have a fucking clue as to what I’m gonna do.
I was watching a “More You Know” commercial that had Donald Trump and it made me wonder, “Does he have to yell every time he speaks?” I swear to god, he was shouting the entire commercial. It really annoyed me, so naturally I have to share my annoyance.
